What is Afghanistan? Afghanistan is a landlocked country located in South Asia It is bordered by Central Asian countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Afghanistan has a rugged terrain and is home to some of the highest mountain ranges in the world. The country has a long history, dating back to the time of Alexander the Great, during which it was part of the Persian Empire. During the 20th century, Afghanistan became a part of the Soviet sphere of influence. After the Soviet invasion in 1979, a long civil war ensued, leading to the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001. Today, Afghanistan is an Islamic Republic and is home to over 35 million people, who are multi-ethnic and multi-lingual. The country is divided into 34 provinces, and its official language is Dari.
