Anne Frank is a legendary figure who is best remembered for her diary, in which she documented her life while in hiding during the Holocaust Her diary has become a symbol of resilience, bravery and hope to many around the world. Anne was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 1929 to Jewish parents. Shortly after Hitler came to power in 1933, Anne and her family were forced to flee to the Netherlands. In July 1942, the Franks went into hiding in a secret annex in an old Amsterdam office building. While in hiding, Anne wrote her diary, which captured her hopes and fears during that tumultuous time. She detailed her life in hiding, the joys of youth, the tedium of living in cramped quarters, her relationships with the other inhabitants of the annex, her dreams of a better world and her fears of being exposed. Anne and her family were discovered in August 1944, and Anne was sent to Auschwitz with her sister, Margot. Anne died from typhus at the concentration camp in 1945, just three weeks before the camp’s liberation.
