Bharatanatyam is an Indian traditional dance form that has been passed down through generations for over two thousand years It is often considered the oldest form of classical dance in India, originating from the ancient state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The name itself is derived from the words “bha”, “ra”, “ta”, “na”, “tyam” which translates to mean “the dance of Bharata.” Bharatanatyam is usually performed to Carnatic music and is based on the Natya Shastra, an ancient treatise on dance, music and theatre. The main elements of Bharatanatyam are Abhinaya, Nritta, and Nritya. Abhinaya refers to the expression of emotions and storytelling through facial expressions and hand gestures, Nritta is the pure dance portion involving intricate footwork, and Nritya is a combination of Abhinaya and Nritta in a performance. Costumes and make-up are also heavily incorporated into Bharatanatyam performances to enhance the story that is being told through the dance. There are many outstanding examples of Bharatanatyam performances from the past and present. The five best examples include: 1. Anjana Anand’s Performance: Anjana Anand is a renowned Bharatanatyam dancer who has performed all over the world. Her most iconic performance was her rendition of “Samudra Manthan” at the L’Oreal Paris Femina India 2016 awards.
