American football is a complex game with many different positions Each position is unique and requires its own particular set of skills. It is important to understand the role that each position plays within the game in order to be successful. Let us take a look at one position in particular; the running back. A running back, also referred to as a halfback, is typically a smaller, quicker player with excellent speed and agility. A running back lines up behind the quarterback in the offensive formation and is responsible for carrying the ball on running plays. The primary role of a running back is to run the ball either in between the offensive linemen or out wide. The running back must also be able to make quick decisions in open space and find running lanes to maximize yardage. The running back must have excellent ball control, balance and vision in order to maximize their efficiencies. Here are five examples of great running backs in the NFL: 1. Saquon Barkley: Barkley is known as one of the best young running backs in the NFL. He has the ability to make defenders miss in open space and turn a small run into a big gain. He also has the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, making him an integral part in the offense. 2. Ezekiel Elliott: Elliott is a powerful and explosive runner that has the ability to move the chains. He has a good combination of power and speed that allows him to break tackles and pick up big chunks of yardage. 3. Alvin Kamara: Kamara is an excellent runner and receiver out of the backfield. He is an elusive runner that is able to make defenders miss in the open field. He is also capable of making the big play, breaking off long runs and catches. 4. Derrick Henry: Henry is a powerful runner that can break tackles and pick up big chunks of yardage. He is a great short yardage back and is known for his ability to run over defenders. 5. Le’Veon Bell: Bell is a patient runner that is excellent at finding running lanes and waiting for his blocks. He is also an excellent receiver out of the backfield that is a dangerous weapon in the passing game. All of these running backs have the ability to take a small run and turn it into a big gain. They also have the ability to make defenders miss in the open field. This makes them invaluable to their teams’ offenses and is why they are all considered to be some of the best running backs in the NFL.
