Anthropology of cities is the study of how people interact and live in the urban environment It looks at the different factors which affect their lives, such as their history, culture, language, and economy. Anthropologists are particularly interested in the effects that globalization and migration have on cities, as well as how urban life affects the lives of different cultural groups. Example #1 – Gentrification: This is a process of change in a city, usually occurring in certain neighborhoods, which often detrimentally affects poorer minority groups. As gentrification occurs, rents and prices for goods and services increase, which can push poorer people out of the area. This process can lead to cultural displacement, as people may be forced to relocate further away from their original homes. Example #2 – Gentrification in Bronx, New York: The Bronx in New York City is often cited as an example of gentrification. In the 1960s, the Bronx was a mostly African-American and Latino neighborhood, but since then much of it has been gentrified. While some of this process is beneficial, as it brings in investment and jobs, it can also lead to displacement of poorer residents and changes to local culture and small businesses. Example #3 – Urbanization: This is the process of cities growing in size, as more people move to them. This process can have both positive and negative impacts. On the one hand, it can bring new jobs and investment, which may improve the lives of those who live there. On the other hand, it can lead to overcrowding and high rent costs, which can push poorer people out of the city. Example #4 – Urbanization in India: India is one of the fastest urbanizing countries in the world. Its cities are growing rapidly and this is leading to a number of changes, both positive and negative. For example, the number of jobs available in cities is increasing, making it easier for people to find work. However, this has also led to rising rent costs, which can make it harder for poorer people to remain in the city. Example #5 – Suburbanization: This is the process of people moving out of cities and into the suburbs. This process can have various effects, including changes to infrastructure and housing availability. For example, suburbanization can lead to increased traffic and more pollution, as more people are driving instead of taking public transport. It can also lead to the closing down of local businesses, as people’s shopping habits change.
