What is Aviation History? Aviation history is the study of the development of the science and technology of aircraft, from the earliest days of flight to the present day It covers the history of all forms of aviation, from hot-air balloons to modern supersonic jets, and from the development of the airplane to its use in war, commercial and recreational practice. By studying aviation history, we can gain insight into the progress and importance of aircraft to the world, from its early uses in warfare to its present-day applications in transportation and recreation. Five Best Examples of Aviation History 1. Wright Brothers: The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, are widely credited with the invention of the first successful airplane. On December 17, 1903, the brothers piloted their self-made, primitively-powered Flyer for a total flight time of just under one minute over the sand dunes near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This event marked the beginning of the airplane's existence and the start of the aviation industry as we know it. 2. First World War: The First World War saw the widespread use of airplanes in European and international warfare. Aerial combat was used to bomb strategic targets and gain a tactical advantage on the ground. Pilots like the Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen, became famous and romanticized for their daring feats and bravery. 3. Human Flight Records: Charles Lindbergh made aviation history on May 20th, 1927 when he flew from New York to Paris in 33 hours and 30 minutes, successfully crossing the Atlantic Ocean solo in his airplane, the Spirit of St. Louis. This marked the first solo transatlantic flight and has since been surpassed by a number of other pilots, including Amelia Earhart, who became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932. 4. Second World War: Airpower was a major factor in the outcome of the Second World War and saw the invention of the first jet fighter and the widespread use of bombers. Aircraft were used for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering, as well as for bombing strategic targets. 5. Commercial Aviation: After the Second World War, commercial airlines emerged and changed the way we travel. Jet engines made long-distance travel quicker, cheaper and more efficient, and the industry boomed. The invention of the Airbus A380 in 2005 revolutionized air travel, making it possible to fly hundreds of passengers in comfort over long distances at a fraction of the cost.
