Circadian rhythm is an integral part of the daily lives of all creatures on this earth It is an internal process that helps maintain an organism’s biological clock – a cycle of physiological activities that repeat approximately every 24 hours. By controlling the sleep-wake cycle, metabolism, hormone production and other important bodily processes, the circadian rhythm plays an important role in maintaining the overall health of an individual. The circadian rhythm is regulated by light and darkness. When light falls on the retina of the eye, it triggers an alertness response and helps to keep us awake. Conversely, darkness shuts off this light-driven alertness and promotes relaxation, allowing us to sleep. Without the circadian rhythm, we would not be able to perform normal everyday activities such as waking up on time or going to bed at a reasonable hour. The best examples of how the circadian rhythm affects our everyday lives can be seen in the following five examples: 1. Sleep: The circadian rhythm helps to regulate our sleep-wake cycle by controlling when we feel alert and when we feel sleepy. When darkness falls, the circadian rhythm triggers melatonin production, which helps us to feel sleepy and relax. Likewise, when light falls on our eyes, our circadian rhythm manages to wake us up. 2. Metabolism: The circadian rhythm also helps to regulate our metabolism by controlling how we process and store food. In the morning, metabolism increases, helping us to feel energized throughout the day. At night, when the circadian rhythm slows, our metabolism slows down as well, allowing us to rest and recuperate. 3. Mood: The circadian rhythm also plays a role in our mood. When our circadian rhythm is disrupted – due to jet lag, for example – we can feel irritable and grumpy. When our circadian rhythm is properly functioning, however, our mood is generally more balanced, allowing us to feel happy and content. 4. Cognitive performance: The circadian rhythm also affects our cognitive performance. When our circadian rhythm is disrupted, our ability to concentrate and think clearly is affected. On the other hand, when our circadian rhythm is in sync with the natural light-dark cycle, our cognitive performance is at its peak. 5. Hormone production: Finally, the circadian rhythm affects hormone production.
