Gilgamesh
Enkidu is a powerful figure in ancient Mesopotamian mythology that has come to represent the archetype of a hero He is a wild man created by the gods who, after encountering the culture of man and learning to live with humans, is eventually able to overcome the gods themselves. In the myth, he is the companion of Gilgamesh, and together, they represent two very different paths, or stories, to wisdom and power. The first example of Enkidu’s story is the battle with Humbaba. Humbaba is a giant figure in the myth, who guards the sacred forest in which Gilgamesh and Enkidu travel. Enkidu is eventually able to slay the giant and win a great victory for man. This example serves to demonstrate his power, both physical and spiritual. The second example is Enkidu’s role in the death of the Bull of Heaven. Sent by the gods to punish Gilgamesh, Enkidu is able to turn the beast away with his strength and bravery. This example shows us the power of his spirit and his ability to vanquish even the mightiest of foes. The third example of Enkidu is his part in the building of the great city of Uruk. It is here that the great temple of Gilgamesh is constructed and where man is able to reach a higher level of consciousness and understanding. This example demonstrates Enkidu’s essential role in the advancement of man. The fourth example of Enkidu is his role in the death of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh dies as a result of a divine curse, and Enkidu is there to help him through the entire process. This example shows us the power of friendship and how even the strongest of heroes may need help in times of difficulty. The fifth example is Enkidu’s part in the myth of invocation and the great fight between Ishtar and Gilgamesh. In this myth, Enkidu takes part in the battle, proving his strength and courage. This example shows us how even those skilled in battle can never be fully prepared for a fight unless they are ready to sacrifice their own lives. Enkidu is a powerful figure in ancient Mesopotamian mythology, and through his story, we can learn about the power of heroism, courage, friendship, and sacrifice. These five examples offer a glimpse into the myth of Enkidu and demonstrate the universal power of epic and mythological heroes.
