The Euro is the single currency of 19 out of the 27 European Union (EU) member countries, each of which is part of the Eurozone The Euro is the official currency of the Eurozone, the region’s monetary union. It replaced the pre-existing national currencies in 2002, and is the second largest reserve currency in the world, after the US Dollar. The Euro was created as a result of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, which set out the economic and monetary union that the Eurozone countries would operate under. This meant that the countries had to fulfil certain economic criteria in order to join the Eurozone and use the Euro, including having fiscal and budgetary discipline, and low inflation. The Euro is used by around 330 million people in the Eurozone and is the official currency of countries such as Germany, France and Italy.
