What is FEC?
FEC stands for Federal Election Commission This agency of the U.S. federal government is responsible for overseeing the campaign finance disclosure laws and regulations during elections. It was established in 1975 to ensure that political campaigns, political parties, and political action committees (PACs) operate in compliance with the law. The FEC also provides guidance and advice to these various entities, as well as implements and enforces the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) of 1971, which regulates how money is used in political campaigns.
The FEC is composed of six commissioners who are appointed by the President, with the advice and consent of the Senate. They serve staggered six-year terms, with no more than three from any one political party. The three primary duties of the FEC are to monitor political campaigns and elections, to enforce campaign finance laws, and to provide public disclosure of campaign finance information. In addition, the FEC also conducts reviews of proposed congressional and presidential campaigns to ensure that they comply with the FECA and that all funds are being used properly.
The FEC strives to promote the fair and equal electoral process, to ensure the accuracy of reported information regarding campaign finance, and to provide the public with timely, comprehensive disclosure of campaign finance-related information.
