Grappling is a form of martial arts that utilizes grappling techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins, and other grappling holds It is used in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions, submission wrestling matches, and in self-defense situations. In MMA and submission wrestling, the goal is to submit the other person by applying a grappling hold such as a choke, an armlock, or a leglock.
Example 1: Clinch Fighting: Clinch fighting is a form of grappling in which fighters use various clinch holds to control their opponent in close quarters. Clinch holds can be used to gain positional dominance and open up opportunities for throws, takedowns, and submissions. Clinching also allows a fighter to defend against strikes, allowing him to wear down his opponent while avoiding damage.
Example 2: Throws & Takedowns: Throws and takedowns are a common way to put an opponent to the ground in grappling. This can be done by using leverage on an opponent’s body to unbalance them, or by using a combination of grips and leg sweeps to take them off guard. Throws and takedowns are important for MMA fighters to take an opponent down in order to set up for ground techniques.
Example 3: Joint Locks: Joint locks are grappling techniques used to control an opponent by manipulating their joints. These locks apply pressure to the joints, such as the arms, legs, and neck, and can be used to cause pain and immobilize an opponent. In MMA and submission wrestling, joint locks can be used to force a submission, or as a way to gain superior position on the ground.
Example 4: Pins: Pinning an opponent is a form of grappling where one fighter is holding the other down and controlling their movements. Pins can be used to temporarily lock an opponent in place and to limit their ability to move freely. Pinning an opponent can also be used to set up for a submission technique or for ground and pound.
Example 5: Submissions: Submissions are grappling techniques used to make an opponent surrender by applying pressure to the joints, muscles, or nervous system. In MMA and submission wrestling, submissions are used to make an opponent “tap out” and concede the match. Common submissions include armlocks, leglocks, neck cranks, and chokes.
