What is HIV?
HIV, which stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system and can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) HIV is a relatively new virus and was first identified in 1981 among homosexual men in the US. Since then, HIV has spread across the globe and infected millions of people.
HIV is a transmissible virus, meaning it can be passed from one person to another through contact with blood or other bodily fluids. HIV can be passed by having unprotected sex, sharing needles, blood transfusions, and from a mother to her unborn child. When someone is infected with HIV, they may not show any symptoms for years.
In the early stages of HIV infection, people may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, nausea, and fatigue, among others. Over time, people with HIV start losing their ability to fight off other illnesses, leading to more frequent and severe infections. As HIV progresses, it can lead to AIDS, a deadly disease in which the immune system is severely weakened and the body is unable to fight off even the most common illnesses.
