Holodomor is a term used to describe the deliberate and artificially-created famine and genocide perpetrated by the Soviet Union against its own Ukrainian citizens, primarily those living in Ukraine, and to a lesser extent, citizens living in Crimea The term was first coined in the early 1930s by the Ukrainian writer Mykola Skrypnyk, who used it to refer to “the extermination by hunger.” It has since become synonymous with the Soviet Union’s systematic and intentional starvation of Ukrainian citizens during the years 1932 to 1933. This atrocity occurred as a result of Joseph Stalin’s policies regarding agricultural collectivization and economic modernization of Soviet Union, which were based on confrontation and the use of terror to force citizens into submission. By 1932, due to the requisition of grain and other food products, along with widespread confiscation of private property and arrests of wealthier peasants, food shortages began to plague Ukraine and its citizens. Despite the country’s abundance in natural resources and thriving agricultural industry, Soviet officials prevented the distribution of food and other vital supplies, which ultimately led to the deaths of millions of people from starvation.
