What Are Honey Bees? Honey bees are a species of insect known for their important role in pollination of plants and production of honey With their small size and almost universally recognized striped appearance, honey bees are a much-loved insect found in many countries around the world. Honey bees are social insects and live in colonies known as ‘hives’. During the springtime, hives can contain up to 30-60 thousand bees within a single colony. The members of the colony are organized into a strict hierarchy, with each individual bee taking on different roles in order to ensure the colony’s success. The queen bee is the leader and the only egg-laying female of the colony. The drones are male bees that are responsible for fertilizing the queen. The large majority of hive members are workers, who are sterile females that maintain the hive, collect pollen and nectar, incubate and feed larvae, and even guard the hive. The honey bee’s greatest strength is its ability to produce honey, hence their name. To create honey, foragers collect nectar from flowering plants. They deposit the nectar in the hive, where it is broken down into simple sugars and stored in wax cells. During the process of collecting nectar and transforming it into honey, the bee also pollinates flowers, leading to the production of fruits and vegetables. This makes the honeybee one of the most important species to the global food supply. Five Best Examples of Essay Topics on Honey Bees 1.
