A mercenary is a professional soldier who fights for money instead of political reasons Unlike regular soldiers, mercenaries do not fight out of loyalty to their state or country, but merely for profit. This type of soldier is not a new phenomenon. Throughout history, people have hired soldiers to fight on their behalf, particularly in times of warfare. Mercenaries have always been a controversial subject, and the subject has been in the news quite frequently in recent years. This essay will explore the concept of mercenaries, explain the different motivations behind their employment, and provide five interesting examples of mercenary activity throughout history. First, mercenaries may be hired for a variety of reasons. Some may be hired for their expert training and battlefield experience, while others may be hired to provide specialized skills that a nation’s own forces lack. In some cases, mercenaries are hired merely to supplement a nation’s own military forces. In other cases, mercenaries may be hired to fight as part of a foreign nation’s forces, such as when a nation is unable to recruit its own soldiers. Finally, mercenaries may be hired to fight as part of an unofficial militia or rebel group. Examples of Mercenary Activity: 1. The Italian Condottieri: From the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, mercenary soldiers known as “condottieri” were employed by Italian city-states, often as part of a larger military strategy. These soldiers had specialized in warfare and were known for their bravery and courage. 2. The Hessians in the American Revolution: During the American Revolution, King George III of Great Britain hired German mercenaries, known as Hessians, to fight against the American rebels. The Hessians’ participation in the war proved to be highly controversial, as the British were accused of using foreign soldiers to squash a rebellion. 3. The French Foreign Legion: Founded in 1831, the French Foreign Legion is a unique military unit composed almost entirely of foreign soldiers. Comprised of volunteers from all over the world, the Legion is sometimes hired to fight as part of a nation’s forces, sometimes as part of a rebel group, and sometimes simply for the esprit de corps of the group itself. 4. The Private Military Companies of the Iraq War: Private military companies, such as Blackwater, played a significant role in the Iraq War, providing security services and “armored personnel carriers” to the US forces. These companies were controversial due to their lack of oversight and accountability, raising questions about the nature of their activities. 5. The Somali Warlords: In the early 1990s, the country of Somalia descended into chaos following the overthrow of President Siad Barre. During this time, various warlords hired foreign mercenaries to fight on their behalf. Among the most prominent of these mercenaries was British soldier, Simon Mann. In conclusion, mercenaries have been a controversial subject since ancient times. While some countries view the use of mercenaries as necessary in times of conflict, others view them as a violation of the laws of war. Nevertheless, mercenaries have played a significant role in many of history’s most significant wars, and their stories remain fascinating for many people.
