What is a Neuron?
A neuron is the basic structural and functional unit of the nervous system in most animals, which transmits electrical signals throughout the body Neurons are made up of three main parts: a cell body, dendrites and axons. The cell body is the ‘nerve cell’ which contains the nucleus and other organelles. Dendrites are short, branching processes whose primary function is to receive electrical signals from other neurons, and the axon is a long process which sends the electrical signals to other neurons. Neurons communicate with each other by producing and transmitting chemical and electrical signals, and their activity is coordinated by synapses, tiny gaps between neurons which allow electrical signals to pass from one neuron to another.
