What Is a Peninsula? A peninsula is a piece of land that sticks out from a larger landmass and is surrounded by water on three sides It is connected to the larger landmass via an isthmus, which is a narrow strip of land that connects two landmasses together. Peninsulas are typically larger than islands and often provide access or borders to natural or manmade bodies of water. Peninsulas can be found on all continents, including Antarctica. They come in many shapes and sizes and are formed in a variety of ways, the most common of which are erosion, tectonic movement, sedimentation, and construction. The shape and size of a peninsula depend largely on the underlying geological process. For example, headlands that form due to erosion are usually long and narrow, whereas peninsulas formed by tectonic plate movements are usually wide and curved. Peninsulas can also form due to the expansion of man-made structures, such as dams and canals. Five Best Examples of Peninsulas 1.
