Ranch is a type of architecture style which was developed in the United States in the mid twentieth century It is a single story building, typically with a low pitched roof extending along the full length of the house, and a long narrow rectangular shape which is well suited for the wide open plains of the Midwest, Southwest and California. It is also characterized by its simple structure, open floor plan and use of natural materials. The style was popularized between 1945 and 1965, and it is considered a classic representation of American architecture. The ranch house style was born out of a need for people to find a practical but affordable solution to modern housing requirements. The use of a single story and an open plan allowed for larger families to live comfortably, while still providing the feeling of spaciousness and the ability to easily expand the home. The open plan also allowed for more interaction between family members and the ability to easily move furniture and other items in and out of the house. The ranch style also incorporated lots of natural materials, such as wood, brick and stone, to give the home an earthy feel. Five great examples of the ranch house style include: The Battle Creek Ranch, located near Cheyenne, Wyoming, is one of the most iconic examples of the ranch style. Built in the 1940s, it consists of one main house, a bunkhouse and several outbuildings, all connected by a large porch. The house is constructed of local materials, such as stained cedar for the exterior and stone for the flooring. The large, open spaces and use of natural materials give the ranch a warm, inviting feeling. The L.A. Mid-Century Modern Ranch, located near Los Angeles, California, was designed by architect Edward Killingsworth in 1956. It has a classic, boxy shape and is made of natural materials such as wood, stone and glass. The house has an open, airy feel, and its flat roof gives it a modern look. The Viso Residence, located in San Francisco, California, is a modern ranch style house designed by architect Andrew Geller in 1960. It has a distinctive A-frame shape, with an open plan kitchen and living area, and a generous outdoor patio. The exterior is clad in stone and wood, and the house has a contemporary look. The Alexander Residence, located in Dallas, Texas, is an example of a traditional ranch style house. Built in 1954, the house has a spacious living room with a stone fireplace, and a large open kitchen with a breakfast bar. The exterior is made of red brick, giving the house a rustic feel. The Young Residence, located in Austin, Texas, is a contemporary ranch house designed by architect Richard Neutra in 1955. It has a classic rectangular shape and is clad in stone and stucco. The interior of the house is open and airy, with lots of natural light and an eclectic mix of modern and traditional furnishings. The ranch house style has had an enduring impact on American architecture, and its popularity continues to this day. Its simple, efficient design makes it a practical choice, while its use of natural materials gives it a timeless beauty. The five examples discussed above are just a few of the many great examples of this classic American style.
