What is Thunder? Thunder is the sound that results from the quick expansion of air that is heated from a lightning strike It is an acoustic shock wave which radiates outward from the lightning strike and can be heard from many miles away. Thunder is caused by a lightning strike, which is an electrical discharge between clouds or between a cloud and the ground. When a lightning bolt strikes, it heats the air around it to temperatures of around 18,000 degrees Celsius, causing the air to expand extremely rapidly.
