UDRP stands for Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy It is a set of legal rules for the arbitration and resolution of domain name disputes. This set of rules was created by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 1999 in order to protect online users from deceptive and confusing websites. According to the WIPO website, UDRP comprises “a standardized legal framework which enables trademark owners to protect their intellectual property through a quick and inexpensive dispute resolution procedure.” The UDRP process is initiated by an individual or organization claiming to be the legitimate owner of a domain name and that another person or organization has infringed upon their trademark rights. The claimant begins the process by filing a complaint with a WIPO-accredited dispute resolution provider. The dispute resolution provider will then conduct an investigation to determine whether the trademark rights of the complainant have been violated. If the dispute is found to be valid, the dispute resolution provider will then order the registrant of the disputed domain name to transfer control of the disputed domain name to the complainant.
