Bloomberg was also a philanthropist, creating and endowing a number of schools and charitable organizations. Bloomberg was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1880. After graduating from high school, he worked as a machinist, apprenticing at an engineering firm before starting his own machine shop. While there, he developed the folding pocket knife, which was the first of its kind. He was awarded a patent for the knife in 1919 and formed the William Henry Bloomberg Manufacturing Company in 1921. The folding pocket knife was not only a useful tool, but also a stylish accessory.
