In its simplest definition, cheating is any attempt to gain an advantage in academic work by dishonest methods. It can take many forms and can be something simple, like copying someone else's work, or something more complex, like using tech savvy ways to cheat on a test. The consequences of cheating in the classroom are numerous and can have long term implications. Cheating can have an impact on the social, ethical, and intellectual development of the cheater. It also impinges on the learning environment, as it can create an atmosphere of anxiety and distrust between students who are unwittingly getting an unfair advantage. Cheating can also lead to allegations of plagiarism, which can cause students to fail courses or, depending on the severity of the case, be removed from school. Now that the implications of cheating in the classroom are clear, let’s go over some of the more common examples. Copying: This is probably the most common example of cheating and it can range from copying an assignment to copying answers on a test. Copying someone else’s work takes virtually no effort and can be done quickly and easily. Collaborating: Cheaters often collaborate in order to get ahead. This could involve sharing notes, discussing answers, or even working together to complete an assignment, with one person taking all the credit. Hiring a Ghostwriter: Some cheaters take the collaboration mentioned above a step further and hire someone to do their work for them. This is a common practice in situations where a student has little or no knowledge of the subject matter and just needs someone to do the work for them. Using Technology: Cheaters often use technology to their advantage. They can use calculators to get the answers to math assignments, or use the internet to find the answers to questions on a test. Additionally, technology can be used to communicate answers to other students in the room. Using Test Banks: Test banks are collections of answers to popular test questions. They are easily found online and can give cheaters a huge advantage on tests. Cheating in the classroom is a serious issue and must be addressed by educators. It can have serious consequences and should be taken seriously. Educators should be aware of the most common examples and take the necessary steps to prevent cheating in the classroom.
