Child labor is defined as work that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children It is estimated that over 250 million children between 5 and 17 years of age are involved in child labor globally and that number increases each year. Child labor is harmful and can have a devastating effect on children as it deprives them of their childhood, impacts their education and can result in long-term physical and psychological health issues. Child labor can take many forms including working in hazardous and unsafe conditions, recruitment as soldiers, forced labor, working in the commercial sex industry, or being trafficked. The following are five of the most prominent examples of child labor in the world today. 1. Forced Labor of Migrant Workers: Forced child labor is a major issue in many countries, particularly those with large and vulnerable migrant work populations. A 2018 report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) found that “children of migrant workers, in particular migrant children born outside of their parents country of residence, are disproportionately at risk of exploitation and abuse”. 2. Trafficking of Children: Human trafficking is a major global issue and children are often amongst its victims. The ILO estimates that 1.2 million children are victims of human trafficking and that that number is growing. Children trafficked for labor, sex and other forms of exploitation are amongst the most severely affected by this modern form of slavery. 3. Dangerous Working Conditions: In many countries, children are employed in dangerous working conditions and hazardous industries. From mining for minerals to working in sweatshops and manufacturing, these jobs can be extremely dangerous and lead to serious physical and mental health issues. 4. Domestic Slavery: Domestic slavery is a form of child labor in which children are employed as domestic workers in households. These children typically have very little in terms of rights and protection, and they are especially vulnerable, as they are often isolated from the public. 5. Sexual Exploitation: Unfortunately, the sexual exploitation of children is still thriving in many countries. Many children, especially girls, are subjected to sexual abuse and exploitation, often in the form of child prostitution or child pornography. These children are exposed to physical and psychological harm and are particularly at risk of trauma. It is clear that these five examples of child labor are extremely harmful to children and must be stopped. Children deserve to have safe, healthy and happy childhoods, and not to be subjected to exploitation, violence and abuse. We must make sure that governments, businesses and individuals are aware of these issues, and that efforts are made to ensure that children around the world are free from the dangers of child labor.
