Cirrhosis is a serious medical condition that occurs when healthy tissue in the liver is destroyed and replaced by scar tissue This can cause irreversible damage to the liver and lead to a number of life-threatening complications. The most common causes of cirrhosis include long-term alcohol abuse, Hepatitis B, and auto-immune diseases. The symptoms of cirrhosis are varied and depending on the severity of the damage can range from minor to life-threatening. As the liver is one of the body’s main filters, the signs and symptoms of cirrhosis can also affect other areas of the body including the digestive system, eyes, and skin. The five most common symptoms of cirrhosis are: 1. Fatigue and Weakness: Fatigue and weakness are common with cirrhosis due to a decrease in overall energy levels. This can make it difficult for someone with the condition to keep up with their daily activities. 2. Loss of Appetite: When the liver is damaged, it can cause a decrease in appetite. This can lead to anorexia, which can further weaken the body and lead to other complications. 3. Nausea and Vomiting: Nausea and vomiting are common with cirrhosis as the damaged liver produces toxins into the bloodstream which can cause these symptoms. 4. Jaundice: Jaundice is a common symptom of cirrhosis. It is caused by an accumulation of bilirubin, a yellow pigment substance, in the skin and eyes. 5. Itching: Itching is a common symptom of cirrhosis as the toxins produced by the damaged liver accumulate in the skin. This can lead to constant and severe itching, which can be difficult to control. Cirrhosis is a serious condition, and it is important to seek medical help as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment can help slow down the progression of the condition and reduce the risk of life-threatening complications.
