However, the five drainage basins listed below are some of the most distinctive, influential, and historic river basins around the globe. The Amazon River Basin is perhaps the most well known of the five. Covering an area of more than 3 million square miles, the Amazon is the world’s largest drainage basin. It is also home to more species of plants and animals than any other basin in the world. The Amazon basin covers much of northern South America and is home to several important cities, including Manaus, Brazil. The Mississippi River Basin is the world’s second largest drainage basin. Spanning more than 1.2 million square miles, it drains the entire Midwest region of the United States, as well as parts of the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The Mississippi River is the fourth longest in the world, and is notable for its iconic role in American culture and industry. The Yangtze River Basin is the world’s third largest drainage basin. Covering an area of some 768,500 square miles, it is located in central and eastern China and is home to the Yangtze, the third longest river in the world. The basin’s agricultural potential was the impetus for China’s Three Gorges Dam, the largest dam in the world. The Nile River Basin is the world’s fourth largest drainage basin. Covering an area of more than 500,000 square miles, it is located in Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. The Nile is the longest river in the world and its basin has been called the “cradle of life” due to its long-standing importance to the area’s cultures, civilizations, and religion over the millennia. The Indus River Basin is the world’s fifth largest drainage basin. Covering an area of some 500,000 square miles, it is located in Pakistan and India and is home to the Indus River, one of the longest rivers in the world. This basin is especially important to India as it is a major source of irrigation and sustenance for the nation. These are five of the most important and influential drainage basins in the world. They are characterized by their distinct geographical features, cultural importance, and influence on the globe. From the Amazon to the Yangtze and beyond, these rivers and their basins will continue to shape our environment and play a significant role in our lives for generations to come.
