Dyscalculia is a learning disorder that affects an individual’s ability to comprehend mathematics It is one of the most common disorders found among school-age children and is more common in boys than girls. Dyscalculia can have an impact on a student’s ability to understand basic mathematical operations, perform basic calculations, grasp mathematical concepts, and comprehend the structure of mathematics. Dyscalculia can be a difficult disorder to diagnose, as symptoms will range from mild to severe, and can sometimes be masked by strong problem-solving skills. Individuals with dyscalculia may struggle with basic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; they may have difficulty recalling sequences, understanding geometric shapes, and/or understanding fractions and decimals. They may also struggle with reading and understanding word problems, estimating, and understanding how numbers relate to one another. Additionally, they may have difficulty recognizing patterns, counting, and working with equations and formulas. In some cases, individuals may also struggle with visual-spatial skills, number sense, and organization of information. These challenges can result in a lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem, which can affect their ability to learn and perform successfully in a math class. Five examples of ways to help students with dyscalculia acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in a math class include: 1. Utilizing assistive technology such as talking calculators that can help summarize and verbalize operations and math formulas. 2. Providing a structured, visual approach to learning math concepts and operations. This can include the use of manipulatives, charts, and diagrams to help students understand and recall mathematical concepts. 3. Building an understanding of mathematics by using real-world examples and applications to help students visualize and understand how math is used in everyday life. 4. Breaking math tasks down into smaller, achievable steps to help students focus on one concept at a time and help them build confidence. 5. Increasing opportunities for practice and review to reinforce learning and help students with dyscalculia retain and understand mathematical concepts. Each of these five examples attempts to provide an environment that can support the learning needs of students with dyscalculia. Assistive technology can make it easier to access mathematical concepts, while providing a visual approach helps provide a comprehensive view to students of how mathematical concepts can be applied in the real world. Breaking tasks down into smaller steps helps students focus on one concept at a time, and opportunities for practice and review ensure that students can recall and use this information. By utilizing these examples, students with dyscalculia can be better equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in a math class.
