What is Empathy? Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person Empathy is the capacity to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, to sense what they are feeling, and to respond to their emotions in a meaningful way. It is a form of communication that provides understanding and connection. At its core, empathy is a feeling — an ability to “tune in” and be understanding towards another person’s emotions. Empathy is a complex and multi-faceted emotion, and there are many theories about how empathy works. Generally speaking, empathy involves the ability to understand another person’s point of view, to read their thoughts and feelings, and to be sensitive to their needs and feelings. It is a form of communication that allows us to intuitively feel and understand another person’s perspective, even to the point of feeling what they are feeling. Empathy is closely related to altruism, which is the unselfish concern and caring for others. Empathy is an important foundation for altruism, since it allows us to better understand and relate to the needs of others. It helps us to be compassionate, generous and understanding towards other people. Examples of Empathy 1. Listening with an Open Mind: Listening with an open mind is an essential part of empathy. It involves actively listening and suspending judgement in order to better understand another person’s perspective. This includes asking questions and showing interest in the other person’s experience. 2. Validate Feelings: Validation involves affirming another person’s feelings and experiences. It is important to let the other person know that you understand and accept their feelings, even if you do not necessarily agree with them. 3. Reflective Responses: Reflective responses are statements and questions that allow the other person to process their thoughts and feelings in a deeper way. Reflective responses can include statements such as “I can hear how difficult this situation is for you”, or asking questions such as “what do you think is the best way to handle this?” 4. Provide Support: Providing support involves offering assistance to the other person, such as helping them with a task or providing emotional support. This helps to build trust and connection. 5. Show Compassion: Compassion is an important part of empathy. It involves understanding the other person’s suffering and offering understanding and kindness. Compassion helps to build a strong emotional connection between two people.
