What are Enzymes? Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts in biochemical reactions They are highly specific, meaning that they act on only one type of molecule, and they speed up the rate of a reaction. Enzymes are found in all living organisms, from bacteria to humans, and they are essential for sustaining life. Enzymes are much like tiny machines, working on molecules to break them down, build them up, or cause them to react with each other in specific ways. For example, enzymes can help break down proteins and carbohydrates into smaller, more usable molecules that the body can absorb and use for energy. Without enzymes, these processes would happen much more slowly and the body would be unable to thrive. Enzymes are also incredibly efficient, reacting to molecules at incredibly fast speeds. Each enzyme has an active site, a region that is specifically designed to interact with a particular molecule or set of molecules. When the molecules come into contact with the enzyme's active site, the enzyme can then catalyze the reaction and allow it to proceed at much faster rates than it would normally.
