Erik Erikson was an influential psychoanalytic theorist whose work has had an incredible impact on psychological and sociological studies He is best known for his eight-stage theory of psychosocial development or, simply put, the concept that our mental and emotional development is characterised by eight stages throughout life, each one having its own set of struggles and rewards. Erikson's psychosocial theory is built on the principle of a continuous, lifelong development of an individual's personality, which is divided into eight stages. Each stage is acquired through a struggle, either with oneself or with previous stages of development, and has its own rewards and pressures. These stages are: trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. role confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and integrity vs. despair.
