What is Filtration? Filtration is a process used to separate smaller particles from larger particles, or to separate particles from a liquid or gas There are many different types of filtration, including mechanical, chemical, biological, and thermal. Mechanical filtration is a process to remove suspended particles from a gas or liquid using particle size as the determining factor of separation. This type of filtration uses a filter medium and pressure to separate the particles. Chemical filtration works by using a chemical reaction that causes a compound to bind with the suspended particles in a gas or liquid. This creates a mass that can be removed from the medium. Biological filtration is a process used to separate organisms from a liquid or gas. This type of filtration works by introducing bacteria to the medium, which consume the particles, causing them to be removed from the medium. Thermal filtration is a process used to remove particles from a liquid or gas using temperature as the determining factor of separation. This type of filtration works by applying heat to the medium, which causes the particles to separate from the medium. The five best examples of filtering processes are: 1. Air Conditioner Filters - Air conditioning filters are used to remove dust, pollen, and other particles from the air. The air passes through a filter medium, which removes the particles from the air before allowing the air to enter the air conditioner. 2. Water Filtration - Water filtration systems are used to remove suspended particles, bacteria, and other contaminants from drinking water. This is accomplished by using a combination of mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration to keep drinking water clean and safe. 3. Fuel Filters - Fuel filters are used to separate contaminants such as dirt, rust, and other particles from gasoline and other fuel sources. This helps to maintain the performance and life of engine components, as well as protect consumers from potential poisons. 4. Coffee Filters - Coffee filters are used to remove coffee grounds from brewed coffee. Coffee filters are typically made of paper or cloth, and are placed in the bottom of the coffee pot. As the hot water passes through the filter, the grounds are caught in the filter and remain in the pot, while the clean water passes through to the carafe. 5. Lint Filters - Lint filters are used to remove lint, dust, and other particles from clothing before it is washed. This helps to keep clothing free of debris, and can also help to extend the life of the clothing. Lint filters are typically made of mesh or paper, and are placed in the washer during the wash cycle.
