Gestation is the period of time between conception and birth during which a baby develops inside its mother’s womb It is a truly amazing process that involves rapid growth and many changes in the baby, the mother, and the relationship between them. Gestation is typically divided into three periods, namely the prenatal period, the labor, and the postnatal period. The prenatal period begins at conception and lasts until birth. During this period, the baby undergoes incredible changes, from a single cell growing into a fully developed and viable baby. In this period, the baby is nourished by the placenta and amniotic fluid, develops organ systems, and grows in size. The mother’s body also undergoes many changes in order to accommodate and nourish the unborn baby. The labor period begins when the mother’s uterus begins to contract, signaling the onset of childbirth. This period lasts until the baby is delivered. During labor, the mother’s body prepares for the delivery, and her baby prepares for the independent life outside the womb. The postnatal period begins when the baby is born and ends when the baby is totally separated from its mother. During this period, the baby will continue to grow and develop as it begins to interact with its environment and explore its newfound independence.
