What is Golda Meir?
Golda Meir (1898–1978) was an Israeli stateswoman and the country’s fourth Prime Minister who served from 1969–1974 Born in Kiev, Ukraine, she immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 8, and eventually moved to Palestine in 1921. She was deeply involved in the Zionist cause, serving as a teacher and as a leader of Mapai and the Israeli Labor Party. Following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Meir became a prominent figure in the cabinet, being appointed Minister of Labor in 1949, Foreign Minister in 1956 and Prime Minister in 1969.
During her time in office and beyond, Meir developed a reputation as a pioneering female politician who was outspoken on a variety of issues.
