of essay topics to explore this issue What is Hamas? Hamas is an acronym for “Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya”, which translates to ‘Islamic Resistance Movement’ in English It is an Islamist Palestinian political and militant organization formed in 1987 at the start of the First Intifada, the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation. Led by Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s main goal is to drive the Israeli military and settlers out of the Palestinian territories and reestablish a Palestinian state. Hamas publishes its own charter, which stipulates that the organization is “fighting against the enemies of Islam and their collaborators.” The charter calls for the destruction of Israel and the establishment of an Islamic state in its place. Hamas also seeks to promote Islamic values not only in Palestine, but across the Arab world and beyond. Hamas has been involved in numerous armed conflicts with Israel since its formation. It has used suicide bombings, rocket attacks, kidnappings, and other forms of violence in its struggle against Israel. These tactics have led to allegations of war crimes and terrorism. In response, Israel has launched several military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, resulting in thousands of civilian deaths and a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Hamas’s commitment to violence has put it at odds with the Palestinian Authority, which is officially recognized by the international community and has a policy of non-violence. While the two factions have been in a state of constant tension since the 1990s, in 2005, Hamas was elected by the Palestinian people to serve in the Palestinian Legislative Council. The election of Hamas sparked controversy in the international community and was seen as a rejection of the peace process. Five Interesting Essay Topic Ideas about Hamas 1.
