The 19th century was an era of advancement in the United States. This period was characterized by the growth of industrialization, innovations in transportation, and the expansion of democracy. The changes that occurred during the 19th century created the foundation for the United States to become the world leader it is today. How did men from the 19th century help to advance the United States? Here are five examples of individuals who made significant contributions during this time period. First, President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). A lawyer by trade, Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was the first president to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing slaves throughout the Union. He was instrumental in passing the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery. Lincoln also guided the Union through the American Civil War, preserving the nation and preserving the Union. Second, President Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919). Carnegie was a businessman and philanthropist. He was the head of Carnegie Steel and became one of the wealthiest men in the world.
