What is Hypatia? Hypatia was an ancient Greek-Egyptian woman who was one of the most influential thinkers of the late classical period and early medieval period She was a mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, as well as a teacher and public speaker. She was also a prominent figure in the Neoplatonist movement and the pre-Nicene era. Hypatia was born in 370 AD in the city of Alexandria, Egypt. She was the daughter of Theon, a prominent mathematician and philosopher. She studied under Isidorus of Miletus and eventually became the head of the Platonist school in Alexandria.
