Imre Lakatos was a Hungarian philosopher of science and mathematics, who believed that philosophy of science must be embedded into the actual practice of scientific research His main aim was to develop a rational, logical and comprehensive approach to scientific study. He proposed a “problem-solving approach” which seeks to explore patterns and structure in scientific investigation, rather than focusing on the details of a particular research subject. Lakatos argued that the scientific method should be seen as an “iterative process” of trial and error, whereby a researcher adapts and refines hypotheses to reflect the results of their research. This means that the idea of simply discovering facts on the first attempt is rejected, as finding the truth about any scientific topic often requires multiple rounds of experimentation and testing. In order to ensure logical and rigorous exploration of scientific questions, Lakatos believed that the scientific community should create and utilize rules and criteria for assessing the validity of research. He thus proposed the use of two distinct but related concepts – the “Theory of Confirmation” and the “Problem of Confirmation”. The former is a set of criteria for judging the strength of a scientific theory and the latter is used to assess the quality of a newly proposed theory. In this context, Lakatos’s writings provide invaluable insight into how scientific inquiry should be conducted, making it an ideal topic for interesting and thought-provoking essays.
