What is Insurgency? Insurgency is a term used to describe a violent internal conflict between a government and a non-state force that is fighting to overthrow the current ruling power It is not typically seen as a conventional war, as the two sides may not be fighting traditional military forces, but rather guerrilla tactics, such as raids and assassinations. Insurgency often involves both political and social elements, and can include a wide range of actors, from rebel groups to warlords to individual citizens. Insurgency can also be driven by religious, economic, and ethnic motivations. Insurgency is not a new phenomenon. It has occurred in many different forms throughout history, from the Roman Republic’s wars with its own Italian allies, to the American Revolution, to the civil wars in Africa and the Middle East. However, the most well-known example of insurgency is undoubtedly the Vietnam War. This conflict pitted the United States-backed South Vietnam against the forces of the communist North Vietnam, and has been studied in detail by scholars and military strategists ever since.
