Jovito Salonga was a Filipino statesman and politician who served as the President of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998 He was a prominent figure in the country’s democratic transition, leading the opposition to the dictator Ferdinand Marcos and successfully ousting him in the 1986 People Power Revolution. He was born in Pasay City on the 5th of December, 1920. He studied in various universities such as the University of the Philippines and Harvard Law School, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree in 1949. After his studies, he joined the Senate of the Philippines and served from 1951 to 1972. He was known for his outspoken stand against Marcos’ iron-fisted rule and was also a vigorous critic of the dictator’s policies. During the People Power Revolution, Jovito was at the forefront of the struggle for democracy, speaking out against the Marcos regime and leading the opposition to him. He was the leader of the Movement for a Free Philippines, which played a major role in helping to bring about the downfall of Marcos. After Marcos’ fall, Jovito was elected as President of the Philippines in 1992. He served in the role from 1992 to 1998 and was credited with bringing stability and prosperity to the country.
