Landscape architecture is a creative and complex field of practice that encompasses both art and science It combines the physical elements of the environment – the land, natural features and manmade structures – with the aesthetic and functional objectives desired by the client. Landscape architects apply their knowledge and expertise of ecology, geology, engineering, art and design to create sustainable, beautiful or functional environments for their clients.
The profession of landscape architecture has been growing in importance, especially as it relates to conservation and sustainability. Professionals in the field have the opportunity to work on projects ranging from urban parks and gardens to suburban subdivisions, from rural restoration areas to coastal reclamation efforts. Landscape architects are in a unique position to affect our built environment in practical ways, while also preserving and restoring the natural environment.
Five examples of successful landscape architecture projects include the Millennium Park in Chicago, USA; the Emscher Park in Germany; London’s Hampstead Heath; the High Line in New York City; and the BR-116 Road in Brazil.
The Millennium Park in Chicago has revitalized an abandoned urban lot near downtown. Professional landscape architects teamed up with engineers, artists, and contemporaries to create a state-of-the-art public park and civic center. The park includes an outdoor skating rink, cinemas, and terraced gardens, along with outdoor art installations, such as Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate sculpture.
The Emscher Park in Germany has turned an industrial wasteland into a beautiful recreation area with over 300 acres of wetlands, forests, and meadows. This project involved dredging the Emscher river and creating soil and water treatment systems, as well as making area accessible for the public to enjoy.
London’s Hampstead Heath is an example of successful urban nature conservation. The heath is home to rare habitats and wildlife species, as well as providing residents with a much needed green respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life. The landscape architects worked closely with local communities, to ensure the heath was properly managed and appreciated by all.
The High Line in New York City is a unique example of adaptive reuse. An elevated railroad track was transformed into an urban park. The High Line is a lush and green corridor, with a series of decks and platforms, providing spectacular views of the city.
The BR-116 Road in Brazil provides an example of how landscape architects can help reduce car emissions and encourage the use of public transportation. The project was designed with a series of green barriers and landscaping along the highway, which were planted to create a carbon sequestration system. The unique project also includes an artistic, interactive bridge installation over the highway.
These five examples demonstrate the diversity and creativity of landscape architecture. Landscape architects are working to create better, more sustainable public, private and commercial spaces. Their work provides an opportunity to improve the quality of life in our cities, both now and in the future.
