Library Classification is an important component of library and information science It is a method of organizing library materials (books, documents, manuscripts, etc.) on the basis of their content, form, or both. Library Classification is also known as “Classification of Knowledge”, because it is based on the recognition that knowledge is organized into a variety of means, and the library material must be classified according to these means. The purpose of library Classification is to facilitate the retrieval of library materials. By using the Classification system, the user is able to effectively locate the required material without having to sift through unnecessary material. By arranging the material according to their subject matter and form, the user is able to access material quickly and efficiently. The five best examples of Library Classification include: 1. Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC): The Dewey Decimal Classification is one of the most widely used library classification systems. It was first developed in 1873 by Melvil Dewey and has since been updated and revised several times. The DDC provides a system for classifying library materials by discipline and form. It is a numeric system that consists of ten basic classes. 2. Library of Congress Classification (LCC): The Library of Congress Classification is another widely used library classification system. It is an alphanumeric system that was developed for the U.S. Library of Congress and is used to classify library materials by their subject matter. The system consists of twenty-one main classes, each divided into a number of sub-classes. 3. Colon Classification (CC): The Colon Classification is an innovative library classification system developed by the Indian librarian S.R. Ranganathan in the mid-twentieth century. It is an alphanumeric system that is used to classify library materials according to eight basic categories or “colons”. The CC is widely used in India and other South Asian countries. 4. Universal Decimal Classification (UDC): The Universal Decimal Classification is a widely used library classification system. It is an alphanumeric system that was developed in the late 19th century by Belgian Paul Otlet and Pierre Béchervaise. It is used to classify library materials according to subject matter and form. The UDC consists of twelve basic classes. 5. Faceted Classification: The Faceted Classification is an innovative library classification system developed in the early 20th century by S.R. Ranganathan and Ellen N. Proposition. It is an alphanumeric system based on the principles of the Colon Classification. The Faceted Classification consists of seven basic classes or “facets”. In conclusion, Library Classification is an important component of library and information science. It is a method of organizing library materials on the basis of their content, form, or both. The five best examples of Library Classification include Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Classification, Colon Classification, Universal Decimal Classification, and Faceted Classification.
