Mara Salvatrucha, commonly known as MS-13, is a transnational street gang originating in Los Angeles, California Established in the 1980s, MS-13 has its roots in El Salvador and is active in many parts of the United states, as well as other countries throughout Central and South America. The gang is known for its violent and aggressive behavior, often involving drug trafficking, extortion, and prostitution. In addition, MS-13 has been linked to human trafficking, as well as money laundering, racketeering and fraud. The gang's name, Mara Salvatrucha, originates from El Salvador and refers to the mixture of Mara, a street term for gang, and Salvatrucha, which is a combination of the words Salvadoran and guerilla fighter. MS-13 has grown to become one of the most powerful and influential gangs in Central and South America. Its members are known for their fierce loyalty and commitment to the gang, which is evidenced by their willingness to use extreme violence to protect their turf and interests.
