Marie Antoinette was the last Queen of France before the Revolution in the late 1700s She remains one of the most iconic and controversial figures in history due to her extravagance, alleged neglect of her country, and her ultimate fate. Marie Antoinette was born Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna in Austria in 1755. She was the 15th child of Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of Austria. In 1770 she married Louis XVI of France and assumed the title of Dauphine. Four years later she became Queen of France. During her reign, Marie Antoinette was known for her extravagant lifestyle. She was criticized for her spending and her lack of sympathy or concern for the poverty-stricken French people. She was also accused of betraying France by helping to orchestrate the disastrous American Revolution War. It was during this period of time that she gained her infamous nickname, “Madame Deficit”. In the fall of 1789 the French Revolution began and Marie Antoinette was arrested and sent to the Conciergerie prison. In October 1793 she was found guilty of treason and executed by guillotine.
