of mummies you can find around the world Mummies are those bodies, either intentionally or unintentionally, that have been preserved after death Preservation usually occurs through the process of natural desiccation in an extremely dry and low oxygen environment, mummification, or by freezing. These remains of the dead are generally found in tombs, caves, or other burial grounds. Mummies have long been associated with ancient Egypt and are the source of much fascination and speculation. As the concept of mummification has been around since ancient times, there have been some incredibly well preserved mummies discovered around the globe. Here are five of the best examples of mummies found throughout history: 1. King Tutankhamun: Perhaps the most famous mummy of all, King Tutankhamun, also known as King Tut, was an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned between 1332-1323 BC. During his reign, he built temples, palaces, and tomb complexes. His mummy was discovered in 1922 by British Archaeologist Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings near Thebes. His mummy was found encased in a golden sarcophagus and well-preserved. 2. The Iceman: The Iceman, also known as Ötzi, is a 5,300-year-old mummy found in the Italian Alps in 1991. Also known as the Tyrolean Iceman, Ötzi is the oldest of all known natural human mummies and is believed to have died from hypothermia. His body was perfectly preserved in a glacier, and upon excavation, his clothing, tools, and weapons were also discovered. 3. The Weeping Woman of Peru: The Weeping Woman of Peru, also known as Juanita, was found in an Incan burial site in the Andes Mountains in Peru in 1995. She was a young girl believed to have been sacrificed to the gods and was perfectly preserved due to the dry mountain climate. Her body was found wrapped in multiple layers of fabric and her hands were covering her face as if she had been weeping. 4. The Duchess of Fatima: Also known as The Egyptian Mummy of the Duchess of Fatima, this mummy was discovered in Cairo in 1881. She is believed to have been a priestess of Isis and was found surrounded by jewelry, amulets and other trinkets. Her body was well-preserved and some believe she was over 3,000 years old. 5. Lady Dai: Lady Dai was the wife of Marquis Yi of the Han Dynasty who reigned from 138 BC to 107 BC. Her tomb was discovered in 1971 and she was found perfectly preserved. Her body was wrapped in a layer of cloth, as well as a layer of clothing. Her face was well-preserved and she was also covered with a sheet of silk. These five mummies, among many others, have been incredibly well preserved since their time of death and are some of the most interesting mummies found across the world. They are a source of much fascination and mystery, and give us insight into the cultures and beliefs of the people who lived at the time of their life.
