Oliver Cromwell was an English statesman, general and political leader who served as the Lord Protector of England and Ireland from 1653 to 1658 In addition to his political career, Cromwell is remembered for his military prowess, strong religious beliefs and his dramatic style of leadership. Cromwell was born in Huntingdon, England in 1599 to a prosperous landowning family. He received a degree in Law from Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in 1616 and became an MP for Huntingdon shortly thereafter. Cromwell quickly distinguished himself as a leader in Parliament during the English Civil War. In 1645, he was elected commander-in-chief of the New Model Army and distinguished himself at the Battle of Naseby. Cromwell rose to power and was proclaimed the Lord Protector in 1653. He served in this capacity until his death in 1658.
