What is Philip Zimbardo?
Philip Zimbardo is an internationally renowned psychologist and academic who has made significant contributions to the field of psychology His work has spanned the entirety of the psychological field, including social psychology, personality, and cognitive research. He is perhaps best known for his Stanford Prison Experiment (1971), where he conducted an experiment in which student volunteers were divided into “prisoners” and “guards” to study the power dynamics and psychological effects of jail life. Zimbardo’s experiment has been cited and studied as an example of the power that situational dynamics can have on human behaviour as well as a cautionary tale against unethical experimentation. His experiment also lead to a plethora of research into the psychology of prisons and inspired many films and books.
