Self-respect is an important part of having a positive self-image It is defined as having a sense of self-worth based on recognizing one’s own intrinsic value and worthiness. It is the ability to have a positive and respectful attitude towards the self that is not determined by what one does or does not have in life. This feeling of worth is not dependent on external factors such as job achievements, financial success, approval from others, physical appearance, or any other external factor. Instead, it comes from within and is based on the understanding that one is a valuable person regardless of what external factors may say. Examples of self-respect include: 1. Being true to oneself: Being true to who one is and not compromising one’s values or ideals. This includes having the courage to be honest with oneself even if it means facing difficult truths. 2. Setting personal boundaries: Having the confidence to set personal boundaries in relationships and to know when to say “no” to others. 3. Having a healthy relationship with oneself: Having a positive, balanced relationship with oneself that includes taking care of one’s own mental and physical health, as well as having a healthy self-talk. 4. Valuing one’s opinion: Having the ability to have a trusting and respectful conversation with oneself. Believing in the importance of one’s opinion and actively seeking to make positive changes in one’s own life. 5. Having self-confidence: Having the ability to trust in one’s own abilities and abilities to reach one’s goals. Believing in oneself and having the courage to take risks and learn from mistakes.
