What Is Sexualization? Sexualization is the process of making something sexual in nature It can be a person, object, idea, ideal, cultural concept, or activity that has been identified and presented as having a sexual character. It typically involves emphasizing the importance of physical and sexual attractiveness in defining a person’s worth and value and can be found in various forms such as in advertisements, media, and products. Sexualization often takes the form of objectification of a person or persons and stigmatized behaviors, and it is often used as a way to gain financial and social power. Objectification can take the form of devaluating a person through words or images, treating them as less than human or commodifying them. Examples of objectifying language may include calling someone a "hot babe" or a "sexy girl." Stigmatized behaviors are those which are considered to be socially unacceptable or socially deviant. Examples of behaviors considered to be associated with sexualization include dressing provocatively, engaging in sexual behavior, and/or engaging in sexually suggestive conversations. Sexualization has been linked to a number of negative effects, such as low self-esteem, eating disorders, and body dysmorphia. It can also lead to unhealthy sexual behavior and increased risk of sexual assault. Examples of Sexualization in the World Today 1. Advertisements and Media - Sexualization is often used in advertisements and media, particularly in the form of objectifying language and imagery. For example, a clothing advertisement might feature a provocative image of a woman with the intent of selling clothing, or a car commercial might feature a scantily clad woman as the focal point. 2. Social Media - Social media can be a key platform for sexualization. On platforms like Instagram, users often post suggestive or objectifying images and videos. This can be further perpetuated and spread through likes, comments, and shares. 3. Music Videos - Music videos often feature sexualized lyrics, images, and/or behavior. Some music videos may also contain suggestive or objectifying language and imagery. 4. Toys - Toys and dolls, such as Barbie, are often sexualized and geared towards girls. They can contain features such as makeup and clothes with the intent of teaching girls to prioritize their physical appearance. 5. Fashion and Beauty - Fashion and beauty can be a form of sexualization. For example, clothing companies may partner with celebrities to sell clothes, and beauty products may aim to make women look more “sexy” or “attractive.”
