Skovholts Cycle of Care is a model that was created by Ray Skovholt to describe the developmental stages of professional counselors’ growth and development This model is a cyclical process that counselors go through as they gain experience in their chosen field while honing and developing their own skills, confidence, and expertise. This cycle consists of four stages: Discovery, Exploration, Establishment, and Renewal. Discovery is the first stage in the cycle. This is where the counselor makes an internal discovery about themselves and their field of counseling. They become aware of their own strengths, weaknesses, areas of expertise, and ways to challenge themselves and grow as a professional. Once the counselor gains insight into their own life, values, and strengths, they move onto the Exploration stage. Exploration is where the counselor begins to apply their newly gained insight and understanding to their chosen field of counseling. This is where counselors come to a better understanding of their role in their field, the value of their skills, and the ethical considerations that come with their work. This stage is commonly referred to as the “learn-by-doing” stage, as it is where counselors hone their skills and gain experience in practice. The third stage in the cycle is Establishment. This is where the counselor has gained enough experience and understanding to practice confidently and independently. At this stage, the counselor has established their identity as a professional and can begin to take on more complex cases. The counselor has a full understanding of the ethical considerations and implications of their work and is capable of making informed decisions. Finally, the fourth stage of the cycle is Renewal. This is a periodic check-in on the counselor’s growth and development, allowing them to adjust their practice and goals as needed. Renewal keeps the counselor motivated and invested in their work. It is an opportunity for growth and reinvention. The counselor revisits their skills, values, and identity as a professional to ensure that they are on track with their journey as a counselor.
