Cryptography
Steganography is the practice of concealing information in digital data, such as images, audio, or text It is a form of hiding messages in plain sight, allowing the sender and receiver to communicate without others detecting the presence of the hidden message. The word “steganography” combines the Greek words for “covered writing” and was used by the Greeks to send secret messages without alerting the authorities. One of the most popular uses of steganography is in digital photographs. By encoding extra data within the photo, like a text message or other secret information, the photo can be used to carry a hidden message. This can be done by manipulating the least-significant bit in the image, which determines the intensity of each pixel in the image. By altering the least-significant bit, a hidden message can be encoded that is only visible to those who know what to look for. Audio steganography is another popular method of hiding messages within digital audio files. By encoding data in the silent spaces between the actual sound data, or by slightly manipulating the waveform of the audio itself, a hidden message can be hidden which will only be visible to those who know what to look for. Text steganography is similar to the other methods in that it hides data within the text of a message. This can be done by adding white space between words, inserting random words and characters, or manipulating the font type and size. Again, these techniques are mostly invisible to the casual observer. Another method of steganography is referred to as “digital signature” steganography, which uses digital signatures to hide information within a digital signature. By manipulating the digital signature to include hidden information, the sender and recipient can communicate without alerting anyone who may not be privy to the hidden content. Some of the best examples of steganography can be seen in the following five examples: 1. The Afghan War Letters: During the Second Afghan War in the 1880s, communication between British forces and the local population was done by passing notes in the form of letters. The letters contained both visible and invisible messages that were encoded on top of the text in the letters. 2. The Second World War Hideouts: During the war, numerous hideouts were built in order to communicate between Allied countries in secret. The hideouts contained both visible and invisible messages, encoded on the walls of the structures. 3. The World Trade Center: The World Trade Center contained several hidden messages in its architecture. In particular, the twin towers contained secret messages encoded within the concrete of the building. 4. The Riddle of the Sphinx: This riddle contained secret messages within the riddle itself, using the play on words to encode the hidden messages. 5. The Voynich Manuscript: The Voynich Manuscript is an ancient book written in an unknown language and is believed to contain many hidden messages. By decoding the manuscript, cryptographers have been able to uncover messages that were written hundreds of years ago. All of these examples showcase the versatility of steganography and its ability to hide messages in plain sight. It is a powerful tool that can be used to protect sensitive information from prying eyes and to covertly send messages in a secure way.
