Suicide Prevention Suicide is a serious public health problem that can have lasting and devastating consequences for individuals, families, and communities It is the act of taking one's own life and, in the United States, it is the second leading cause of death among people ages 10-34, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In order to prevent suicide, it is important to understand the risk factors associated with it. These factors can include mental health conditions, access to lethal means, relationship issues, substance misuse, social isolation and/or stigma, financial stress, and physical health issues. In addition, it is important to recognize that risk management and prevention are two different strategies. Risk management involves monitoring and managing an individual’s risk factors to reduce the likelihood of suicide. Prevention, on the other hand, focuses on interventions that can reduce the likelihood of suicide among all individuals in the population. The best way to prevent suicide is by recognizing the warning signs and reaching out to those at risk. Here are five examples of how to prevent suicide: 1. Increase Access to Mental Health Services: Mental health is an important factor in suicide prevention, but access to mental health services is often limited due to a lack of mental health professionals, long waiting lists, and/or prohibitive costs. Increasing access to mental health services can help those at risk get the help they need. 2. Connect People to Supportive Relationships: Social isolation and loneliness are associated with increased risk of suicide. Connecting people with supportive relationships, such as friends, family, peers, and community members, can help reduce this risk. 3. Educate the Public on Risk Factors and Warning Signs: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors can often be identified early on, so it is important to educate the public on the risk factors and warning signs of suicide. This will help individuals and loved ones take action if they see potential signs of risk. 4. Increase Access to Resources for Help: If someone is thinking about suicide, it is important to provide them with resources for help. This can include crisis hotlines, crisis centers, and/or mental health professionals. 5. Promote Help-Seeking Behavior: It is important to promote help-seeking behavior among those at risk for suicide, as well as among the general public. This involves encouraging people to reach out for help if they are struggling and to seek help if they see that someone else is struggling. These five examples of how to prevent suicide should be used in combination with other prevention strategies, such as risk management and public policy initiatives. Suicide is a serious public health issue, but with the right interventions, we can reduce the number of deaths due to suicide and help those at risk get the help they need.
